quicksand

Sand that has lost its grain-to-grain contact by the buoyancy effect of water flowing upward through the voids. Such material, having some of the characteristics of a fluid, possesses no load-bearing value.

strain-relief cable

A steel cable or bridle used to grip a CCTV camera cable to provide some slack and strain relief so the cable does not pull free of the camera during use or pull-back.

membrane fouling

The cause of a loss of flow through the membrane as a result of material being retained on the surface of the membrane or within the membrane pores. Membrane fouling may be reversible or irreversible. Loss of flow through the membrane by reversible fouling can be recovered by regular backwashing of the membrane surface. Flow loss by irreversible fouling cannot be recovered.

CMOM (capacity, management, operation, and maintenance)

A program developed by collection system agencies to ensure adequate capacity and also proper management, operation, and maintenance of the collection system to prevent sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs).

average demand

The total demand for water during a period of time divided by the number of days in that time period. Also called average daily demand.
