nitrification (NYE-truh-fuh-KAY-shun)

A 2-step aerobic process in which bacteria oxidize the ammonia in water and wastewater into nitrite, and then nitrate. The amount of oxygen required to oxidize the ammonia into nitrate is referred to as the nitrogenous BOD. Also see denitrification.
