present worth

The value of a long-term project expressed in today's dollars. Present worth is calculated by converting (discounting) all future benefits and costs over the life of the project to a single economic value at the start of the project. Calculating the present worth of alternative projects makes it possible to compare them and select the one with the largest positive (beneficial) present worth or minimum present cost.
