nonvolatile matter
Material such as sand, salt, iron, calcium, and other mineral materials that are only slightly affected by the actions of organisms and are not lost on ignition of the dry solids at 1,022°F (550°C). Volatile materials are chemical substances usually of animal or plant origin. Also see inorganic waste and volatile solids.
