nitrification (NYE-truh-fuh-KAY-shun)

A 2-step aerobic process in which bacteria oxidize ammonia into nitrite, and then nitrate. The amount of oxygen required to oxidize the ammonia into nitrate is referred to as the nitrogenous oxygen demand (NOD). Also see denitrification.
