ionization (EYE-on-uh-ZAY-shun)

  1. The splitting or dissociation (separation) of molecules into negatively and positively charged ions.
  2. The process of adding electrons to, or removing electrons from, atoms or molecules, thereby creating ions. High temperatures, electrical discharges, and nuclear radiation can cause ionization.
