tailgate safety meeting

Brief (10–20 minutes) safety meetings held periodically or as needed. The term comes from the safety meetings regularly held by the construction industry around the tailgate of a truck. Also called toolbox safety meeting.

dew point

The temperature to which air with a given quantity of water vapor must be cooled to cause condensation of the vapor in the air.

captive shop

Those electroplating and metal finishing facilities that own, in a calendar year, more than 50 percent (based on area) of material undergoing metal finishing. Also see job shop.

flame polished

Melted by a flame to smooth out irregularities. Sharp or broken edges of glass (such as the end of a glass tube) are rotated in a flame until the edge melts slightly and becomes smooth.

hard water

Water having a high concentration of calcium and magnesium ions. A water may be considered hard if it has a hardness greater than the typical hardness of water from the region. Some textbooks define hard water as a water with a hardness of more than 100 mg/L as calcium carbonate.
