An act passed by the US Congress to control water pollution. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act passed in 1972 (Public Law 92-500). It was amended in 1977 (the Clean Water Act, Public Law 95-217) and again in 1987 (the Water Quality Act, Public Law 100-4).
