BMP Retrofit Pilot Program: This 30-million-dollar
research effort involved retrofitting 38 Caltrans facilities
(freeways, interchanges, park and ride lots, and maintenance
stations) in Los Angeles and San Diego counties and pilot testing
them for three years. BMPs tested include extended detention
basins, infiltration basins and trenches, a wet basin, media
filters, biofilters (swales and strips), drain inlet inserts,
continuous deflection separators, multi-chambered treatment
trains, and an oil/water separator.

State Route 73 Pilot Program: Various stages of design,
construction, and monitoring are currently underway for
approximately 30 BMPs along the San Joaquin Hills Transportation
Corridor (SR73) in Orange County. BMPs include modified detention
basins, sand filters, gross solids removal devices, Compost
StormFilter™, and a bioretention filter.

Roadside Vegetated Treatment Sites (RVTS) Pilot
Program: Completed the second and final year of testing on
four RVTS in northern California and four RVTS in southern
California. The interim results of the RVTS Study were presented
at the International Erosion Control Association (IECA) 2003
Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. IECA honored this paper with the
“Most Distinguished Technical Paper Award” for the
2003 conference.
