Full-Scale Structural BMP Pilot Studies

BMP Retrofit Pilot Program: This 30-million-dollar research effort involved retrofitting 38 Caltrans facilities (freeways, interchanges, park and ride lots, and maintenance stations) in Los Angeles and San Diego counties and pilot testing them for three years. BMPs tested include extended detention basins, infiltration basins and trenches, a wet basin, media filters, biofilters (swales and strips), drain inlet inserts, continuous deflection separators, multi-chambered treatment trains, and an oil/water separator.

State Route 73 Pilot Program: Various stages of design, construction, and monitoring are currently underway for approximately 30 BMPs along the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor (SR73) in Orange County. BMPs include modified detention basins, sand filters, gross solids removal devices, Compost StormFilter™, and a bioretention filter.

Double-barrel sand trap at Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Basin Sand Trap Pilot Studies: Completed a 2-year pilot study on the treatment effectiveness of two double-barrel sand traps in the Tahoe Basin.

Other Tahoe Basin Pilot Studies: Construction is complete and the first year of monitoring is ongoing for two alternative media pilot systems on Highway 50. Construction is planned for two systems on State Route 267 to pilot test sand traps followed by filter fabric covered discharge orifices. No reporting documents are available at this time.

Roadside Vegetated Treatment Sites (RVTS) Pilot Program: Completed the second and final year of testing on four RVTS in northern California and four RVTS in southern California. The interim results of the RVTS Study were presented at the International Erosion Control Association (IECA) 2003 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. IECA honored this paper with the “Most Distinguished Technical Paper Award” for the 2003 conference.

Linear Radial Device

Gross Solids Removal Devices (GSRDs) Program: Nine pilot studies on GSRDs have been completed. The GSRDs included linear radial devices, inclined screens, and baffle boxes. Three pilot studies on new concept GSRDs are ongoing.
Phase I Gross Solids Removal Devices Pilot Study: 2000-2002. Final Report, October 2003. CTSW-RT-03-072.31.22
