OWP representatives attended the 2012 CWEA Conference in Sacramento, CA, which also happens to be OWP's home city. The conference was held at the Sacramento Convention Center in beautiful downtown Sacramento and offered the Office of Water Programs a chance to meet and interact with many people from within the water and wastewater industries. A few appearances by Ken Kerri afforded some in attendance good photo opportunities, and others the chance to ask questions about future courses, CEUs, and other training information.

Ken Kerri presents to Jordanian delegation
"Comparison of Treatment Process Sustainability at Water Plants in the Sacramento Region," a paper authored by Ken Kerri, Camille Campeon, Fabien Espinasse, and Kurt Ohlinger, has been selected as the winner of the 2012 AWWA Water Resource Sustainability Division Best Paper Award.
The goal of this study was to compare the sustainability of different water treatment processes for drinking purposes in the Sacramento region, considering environmental impacts (including greenhouse gas emissions), costs, and operation and maintenance. Eleven plants were studied, and sustainability comparisons were developed, for conventional water treatment processes, microfiltration, pressure filtration, slow sand filtration, and the ballasted flocculation process.

You can find out more information on the AWWA website.

Ken Kerri presents to Jordanian delegation
A delegation from Jordan is in Sacramento this week to learn how OWP and California train and certify operators and managers of water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment and reuse facilities. Sacramento City Councilman Steve Cohn and staff from Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan's office, as well as Dean Emir Macari of Sacramento State's College of Engineering, were on hand to welcome the delegation at a working session on January 10. Officials from the State Water Resources Control Board, the California Department of Public Health, the California Water Environment Association, the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District, and the City of Folsom also participated in the discussions, which will help shape the way the people of Jordan develop their own systems.

While here, the delegation will also tour several area treatment facilities in Carmichael, Sacramento, and Roseville.

OWP at CalTAP Symposium December 2011
The Office of Water Programs was invited to attend the CalTAP Wastewater and Drinking Water Symposium in Claremont, California. The symposium was jointly sponsored by the California Department of Public Health and the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC). The event program learning tracks were taught by the California Technical Assistance Providers (CalTAP) through RCAC, and the morning session included presentations highlighting the services offered by these providers.

Once again, OWP was a featured presenter and exhibitor at the annual event. We were able to answer questions about operator training and provide information on how our training courses work. As usual, it was an excellent opportunity for OWP to meet the operators and students who take our courses. We want to especially thank our kind hosts, Kay Mulligan, Sheri Miller, Karen McBride, John Hamner, Neil Worthen, Joy Gannon, Stevan Palmer, and Brian Phillips of RCAC, who took great care of us and invited us to present at the event.

Posted June 2011 - The Office of Water Programs hits the road!
The Office of Water Programs has been on the road lately! We participated in the CWEA (California Water Environmental Association) and the CRWA (California Rural Water Association) conferences in April, and we attended the CalTAP Fair in Fortuna in June. We had the opportunity to meet many of our students and to answer some important course-related questions. These opportunities would not have been possible if it weren't for Megan Yoo of CWEA, Lara Newth and Dan Demoss of CRWA, and Kay Mulligan of RCAC. We are always happy to visit with our students and colleagues and hope to meet you soon!

Our founder, Ken Kerri, was an esteemed judge of the water tasting competition while a few of us staffed our exhibition table. Many past and current students stopped by to chat and give us some much-appreciated comments and suggestions, and OWP staff had the opportunity to sit in on some of the class sessions to learn new ways to present material to our students.
