confined space, class a

A confined space that presents a situation that is immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). These include but are not limited to oxygen deficiency, explosive or flammable atmospheres, and concentrations of toxic substances.

polymer (POLY-mer)

A long-chain molecule formed by the union of many monomers (molecules of lower molecular weight). Polymers are used with other chemical coagulants to aid in binding small suspended particles to larger chemical flocs for their removal from water. Also see polyelectrolyte.

sludge digestion

The process of changing organic matter in sludge into a gas or a liquid or a more stable solid form. These changes take place as microorganisms feed on sludge in anaerobic (more common) or aerobic digesters.

positive pressure

A pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, measured as pounds per square inch (psi), inches of water column, kilograms per square meter or centimeter (kg/m2 or kg/cm2), or Pascals (Pa).
