16. Membrane Treatment Processes (Membrane Filtration and Demineralization) Objectives

Following completion of Chapter 16, students should be able to:

  1. Describe various membrane technologies used to treat water.
  2. Explain various types of membrane filtration processes.
  3. Evaluate potential membrane pretreatment alternatives.
  4. Operate and maintain a membrane filtration treatment plant.
  5. Keep accurate and appropriate records for a membrane filtration plant.
  6. Develop, implement, and maintain a membrane filtration plant maintenance program.
  7. Describe the various demineralizing processes.
  8. Explain how the reverse osmosis process works.
  9. Operate and maintain a reverse osmosis demineralization plant.
  10. Explain the principles of electrodialysis.
  11. Identify and describe the parts of an electrodialysis plant.
  12. Operate and maintain an electrodialysis plant.
  13. Safely perform their duties around reverse osmosis and electrodialysis plants.

The main purpose of this chapter is to teach operators how to safely operate and maintain membrane filtration treatment plants and also reverse osmosis and demineralization plants.
