8. Corrosion Control Objectives

Following completion of Chapter 8, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize adverse effects of corrosion.
  2. Describe how a pipe corrodes.
  3. Determine if corrosion problems exist in their system.
  4. Determine if a water is saturated with calcium carbonate.
  5. Select the proper chemical to control corrosion.
  6. Determine the proper chemical dose to control corrosion.
  7. Use cathodic protection to control corrosion.
  8. Prevent soil corrosion (external corrosion).
  9. Troubleshoot and solve corrosion problems.
  10. Explain and implement the Lead and Copper Rule.

The main purpose of this chapter is to teach operators how to identify corrosive water and damages to pipes and facilities caused by corrosion. Also, operators should be able to select and implement corrosion-control programs.
