7. Safety Objectives

Following completion of Chapter 7, students should be able to:

  1. List the responsibilities of operators and managers for safety.
  2. Prepare and conduct tailgate safety sessions.
  3. Conduct a safety inspection of the water distribution system facilities.
  4. Protect other operators and yourself while working in and around water distribution system facilities.
  5. Identify and safely handle hazardous chemicals.
  6. Recognize electrical hazards.
  7. Operate and maintain water storage facilities, wells, and pumps safely, with attention to the safety of operators and consumers.
  8. Inspect safety features of vehicles and equipment.
  9. Drive vehicles defensively and safely.
  10. Work safely in streets.
  11. Protect the motoring public and pedestrians from work areas in streets and sidewalks.
  12. Understand the proper use of temporary traffic control (TTC) zone devices.
  13. Follow the safety rules for excavations.

The main purpose of this chapter is to make operators aware of the importance of safe procedures and of the need to develop a safety program for their facilities.
