7. Laboratory Procedures Objectives

Following completion of Chapter 7, students should be able to:

  1. Work safely in a laboratory.
  2. Operate laboratory equipment.
  3. Collect representative samples.
  4. Preserve and transport the samples.
  5. Prepare samples for analysis.
  6. Describe the limitations of lab tests.
  7. Recognize precautions to be taken for lab tests.
  8. Record laboratory test results.
  9. Perform the following field or laboratory tests—alkalinity, chlorine residual, chlorine demand, coliform, hardness, jar test, pH, temperature, and turbidity.

The main purpose of this chapter is to teach operators how to work safely in a laboratory, collect representative samples, accurately analyze samples, and properly record laboratory test results.
