3. Wells Objectives

Chapter 3 is divided into two sections. In the first section, we have assumed that students are responsible for the operation and maintenance of a well. In the second section (the Appendix), we have assumed that students' responsibilities have been expanded and require the knowledge and skills necessary to select a well site, work with a well driller, test and evaluate pumps and wells, and also abandon and plug wells.

Following completion of Chapter 3, students should be able to:

  1. Protect a well from contamination.
  2. Identify the parts of a well and pump system.
  3. Maintain and rehabilitate a well.
  4. Operate and maintain a well pump and hydropneumatic pressure tank.
  5. Inspect a well and pumping system.
  6. Disinfect wells and pumps.
  7. Keep accurate records of a well and pumping system.
  8. Remove sand from water and mains.
  9. Troubleshoot a well and pumping system.

Following completion of the Appendix of Chapter 3 (optional), students should be able to:

  1. Select a well site.
  2. Describe the types of wells and drilling methods.
  3. Test and evaluate a well and pump.
  4. Abandon and plug a well no longer productive or needed.

The main purpose of this chapter is to teach operators how to operate and maintain a well and the pumping system.
